“MOON” A celebration of Korea’s most iconic vessel.

Space In Between, with Gallery LNL, presents Moon: works by ceramicists Kim Yikyun and Kang Minsoo, with photographer Koo Bohnchang, exploring the moon jar as form, symbol, and Korean aesthetic value.

The moon jar occupies a singular place within Korean cultural history, embodying ideals of humility, balance, and natural beauty. First produced during the Joseon Dynasty, these large porcelain vessels were formed by joining two hemispherical halves, a process that often resulted in subtle asymmetries and irregularities that became central to their appeal rather than flaws to be corrected. Unlike the highly ornamented ceramics prized elsewhere, the moon jar’s luminous white surface and unadorned form reflect the Confucian values that shaped Korean society: restraint over excess, sincerity over display, quiet elegance over spectacle. Over time, the moon jar has come to represent the Korean aesthetic sensibility itself, an appreciation for harmony, simplicity, and the beauty found in imperfection. Today, it remains one of Korea’s most celebrated ceramic forms, bridging tradition and modernity while continuing to inspire contemporary artists.

Kim Yikyun and Kang Minsoo honour the techniques and philosophies of the past while reworking them through a contemporary visual language. Koo Bohnchang turns his lens toward the vessel itself, presenting these jars as if in family portraits. His photographs reveal a tactile, almost living quality, capturing the quiet traces of time held within objects once central to everyday ritual. The moon jar becomes less an artefact and more a presence, carrying memory within its curved white form.

Together, these three perspectives present the moon jar as a living symbol of tradition, materiality, and reinterpretation.
